OnLive ... the next best thing for video gaming?
« on: July 08, 2010, 08:08:25 AM »
I have not tried it just yet because it requires a direct connection to the internet, and there's only one hub in my house that utilizes this ... everywhere else in the house is wireless.

Anyone else sign up for this service? Any thoughts or ideas?

That's the first cloud computing service right? I've been reading about the concept for some time now. I think it's awesome, but I'm not sure how well it will actually work since we're in the very early stages of this sort of thing.
Although, I also don't like it. If cloud computing takes off, you won't actually own any games anymore, you'd buy them, play them, and as soon as you stop paying the subscription, the games you paid for aren't accessible anymore.
I don't know, sometimes I fantasize about quitting work forever and just play all the games I collected, never buy anything new again. You couldn't really do that if you didn't have physical copies of the games, also this could bring about the slow demise of consoles.

From what I understand though, you could basically equip a PC from the early 90's with a good internet connection and play the newest game with the best graphics, and that's pretty cool.

Yeah! The whole concept is pretty dope! Some people's reviews of the concept is discouraging though. I think most people that would complain about it are the people that have these huge ass custom built pc's. Because OnLive computes just to a certain limit for someone to actually play the game, if that makes sense. I'm actually considering going in for it because if I can sell my xbox 360 for like $200, and get something like this, and rent some games here and there on weekends, it'd take me a while to catch up to $200.

I think a big concern for me right now, is how much the service will cost per month. I'm hearing numbers like $15 a month. Way too much for something that is just beginning!
