Fully Electric Car
« on: September 14, 2009, 02:13:51 AM »
The Nissan "Leaf" gets about 100 miles a charge and it supposedly costs less to pay off every month than to pay for gas for the average car. Looks like Japan is releasing their own version of the EV1.
The price is between $25,000 and $33,000 and be in the U.S. by 2010. Think it'll be a success? The U.S. auto industry needs something and fast to stay in the market by 2020. (My estimation).

$33,000 for a car that is hideous and can only do 100 miles at a go?

Note how we really need these things on the road. And it's the first one they made. Plus 100 miles a charge is really good. GM is expected to make one that goes only 40 miles a charge.  The average person drives just under 30 miles a day and it would fit the lives of most people. They will get better in the future.

No, they will be obsolete in the future.

There is no good reason to switch to electric cars, hydrogen fuel cell or biofuels or something else may become necessary if we run out of petrol.

With these shitty battery powered cars all it means is that the oil is burnt somewhere else and there are more stages to lose energy; burn oil->steam->drive turbine  to generate electricity-> process (step up/step down transformers + DC-> AC -> DC ) - and transit electricity electricity across the country> charge battery->use power in battery into motor-> into movement.

Burn petrol-> drive engine-> movement.

Batteries are very heavy too which doesn't result in an efficient car and after a few years the batteries need replacing which leaves a nice lot of battery acid to dispose of.

According to top gear because parts for a Prius have to be flown from all corners of the world it does more long term damage than a land rover discovery, although I don't know how much truth there is in that.

Wind, solar, waves, and dams make power without pollution.
And hydrogen fuel cell cars cost over $800,000.00 right now. Action can be taken right now with electric then make the way to hydrogen fuel cell but going straight to hydrogen will be a major fail.
No good reason? How about the price? How about free gas? How about a very very quiet car? How about being one of millions to take action on something that people have been looking at for years? Going electric is way closer in the future than hydrogen. Look at our hybrids. Their half electricity, not hydrogen. And at least 95% of americans don't drive across the country on a daily bases. And if you live more than 90 miles from your work then your using up a lot of gas as it is.
Batters are heavy and so are engines. Like hydrogen engines are much lighter.
And how would you know about the future? Hydrogen isn't even close to being a success in the market, unlike electricity and renewable energy. Those are boosting in the market. Don't like how this was typed up? Deal with it.

^First result in google images, lol, maybe inaccurate. http://www.globalactionplan.org.uk/energyfacts.aspx

But electric cars are also ridiculously expensive, electicity isn't free, people don't hear them coming and step out into the road, 100 miles is hardly cross country and it doesn't have to be on a daily basis. Most people don't have 2 cars, one of which costs $30K, so they can drive over 100 miles if they need to (realistically 50 miles if you want to get home and don't want to spend an hour in a petrol station).

Incidentally, wind farms are fucking hideous, I bet you wouldn't want one in the countryside near you.

25-30k isn't that high of a price for a new car. And Hydrogen is over 800k which not even rich people would want to waste their money on because of the rare refueling stations. Hydrogen costs more than gas in the first place. And electricity powering would be about 30¢ a gallon if it measured that way.
And that's UK. What about US? America has more cars than any other country on the planet.
Wind farms aren't that ugly. They sure as hell look better than coal and nuclear power plants anyway. Plus there is one in my countryside and there's a dam not too far up the river that produces electricity.

Paying for a new car would be easy with the one I posted. The average driver would spend less every month on this car than paying for gas. So they get a car and money in a way of speaking.
You can plug your car in at work and it takes just under 30 minutes to charge the battery to 80%.
I'm guessing you work for an oil company because you revolt against the electric car.

People don't hear them but they will hear about them. The cars are so damn quiet which is great for small towns at night.
Check your facts before starting another flame war.
Does a free car and some spare cash sound good or what? And this is just the beginning!

Edit: U.S. citizens will get a $7,500.00 tax break if they buy this car.

Americans spend an average of $148 of gas per month. It's not going to be payed off in one year. Lots of people do a 3 year deal with the dealer. And 33k is the max and 28k is the minimum. Let's just say it's 31k, the median. Not many people pay off more than $120 per month for their cars so it's still like getting a free car, and then some. If it was $140 a month it would still be saving money. And getting a car with it. Tell me, would you rather pay 30 cents a gallon of gas or about 3 bucks?

In the UK it is over £1/litre lol.

I have just passed my bike test (or the first part of it) so will be riding a bike not driving a car anyway. :P

Nice. A bike law? Do you need a licence to ride a bike in the UK?

Well first off before you can even get your L-plates you need to do a CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) which allows you to ride up to a 125 with less than so much hp (I think about 15) on L-plates on the roads, but you aren't allowed to go on motorways or carry a passenger and some other stuff.

Then you need to take a theory test which allows you to take the practical test

You then take a module 1 test which is off-road in a test center (which some people have to ride for hours to get to because they didn't build enough) which makes you drive through cones in a slalom and do emergency stops and the like.

If you pass that then you take the module 2 test which is on-road just riding around like a driving test.

If you are 16 you can only ride up to a 50cc scooter with a speed limit of 28 mph (pretty dangerous).
If you are 17+ you can get a full license but have to restrict your bike to 33 bhp for 2 years after passing.
If you are 21+ you can take your mod1+2 on a bike with 50bhp+ and then you are unrestricted after passing, but if you do your test on a 125 you are still restricted.

I have to go back to university next week and couldn't get a mod 2 test in time, so will have to do that at christmas. :(

Electric bikes based off batteries are again no good because the batteries are so heavy.

Now that sucks. Too much work for a bike license.
And electric motorcycles are out. They weigh pretty much the same amount as a regular one. And an electric motor its self weighs less than a gas one because of the fewer components needed to run it. So having a battery on a motorcycle doesn't make much of a difference. Seriously, look your stuff up first. Now on just an average bike, adding a motor to it period would add a lot of weight to it.

But they don't go everywhere and are usually only in areas with larger populations. And with them being on a fixed track, you can't go anywhere but on the track. We just have to wait and see what the future has in store for us.
