Hello folks! New to Segahub ....
« on: June 03, 2009, 06:20:06 PM »
Hiya!

I just bought my first DreamCast off eBay with 18 games, 3 controllers and 2 VMU and 1 Memory Unit.

I'm excited to get it and I'm hoping the unit is old enough that I can play selfboot images.   I see some games aren't selfboot and require Utopia Booter to work, can those be converted to Self-Boot? If so can someone give me a link on how I might do that?

Thanks a bunch! :)

Most games are self boot but yeah you can convert pretty much any dc game to self boot. So I'll tell you that much :)

welcome, I didn't say hi before because it's somewhat complicated sometimes to make games self boot. There's a few tools you can download here at segahub for doing just that, but I've not had much luck myself.
And as a general rule the games that aren't already self booting images aren't because they wouldn't fit onto a standard cd-r otherwise. (self booting games are slightly larger)

Well I've tried ExoBoot, Selfboot and Bootdreams on GigaWing - Kalisto and none of them yield a viable selfboot.

I haven't tried Echelons tutorial yet because that requires authoring directly to a CD-R.

Try downloading the PAL version, I suspect that is self booting, although I haven't checked so there is a possibility it won't be.

Sorry for my ignorance. Will the PAL version play on an NTSC console?
:)

I have PAL Dreamcast and all games (burned of course) are working, as selfboots and as non-selfboots for utopia boot cd. Games on dc and ps2 are optimized in program way, so no need to worry about 50 Hz / 60Hz- every game'll be running the same on PAL or NTSC consoles ^-^.
But sat and ps are another tale... when you'll try to run ntsc game on pal console, you'll get the black strips and slower running speed (30s will be 25 s- big >:( slowdown...).
Hmmm i've wanted to translate from my national language many tests and describtions for it, but it's little too hard for my english abilities ;), but i'll try to do it anyway...for a some time.
And about ps3- you can buy any game everywhere and run it on any console :o, hehe, it's amazing!! But if you want to play on ps2 games on it-  ??? you must buy pal or ntsc copy of the game suitable for your system...but who's playing now in ps2 games on ps3:), maybe only I :D.
p.s. Hdmi cable's doing its job 8)!!
