konnichiwa!
« on: October 06, 2008, 07:00:20 PM »
Hello hello.
Im a foreigner (USA) living in Tokyo.
I bought a DC for a couple of reasons:

1: dirt cheap
2: im not a hardcore gamer. I play games once in a while, when I dont have a million other things to do.
3: its just a damn cool machine!
4: being into engineering, I want to hack on the hardware (ARMcore). It wont break the bank, and its just old enough to be not too difficult to work with.

I am on an inspired quest to attach that ever elusive hard drive or other media device. I have found several people mentioning that they WANT to try it, but no one actually managed to do it.
Unfortunately, I am low on free time myself.
Perhaps one day though I will manage to mash something together.

Anyway, I do have a question:
What is the general take on Torrents?  I notice that most of the downloads are several files on rapid share or megaupload. These sites are a real pain for a non registered user to work with (imagine waiting 2 minutes to click the download button, 15 times for a multi-part file). If you manage to get all the parts without an error, or missing file, you still have to join them.
I would say thus far, I have had a 25 percent success rate in getting a properly working image file.

Why not do unlisted torrents? perhaps I am missing something in how torrents are tracked, but I know that when starting a torrent, you can choose to make it private.

have to agree with fenix you only have to see how many member's bother to post, most cant even be botherd to thank the uploader imagine if it was a torrent you'd have a few seeds and 100's leeching the arse out of it

anyways welcome to the hub :)

And? I was affirming that, so he knows not just you think that :).

You're making the situation seem a lot worse than it is.

1.  Very few of our downloads are hosted on rapidshare, and the most parts you'll have to download off of rapidshare per game is 6 or 7.  Only one of our uploaders used that site.
2.  A good number of our games are on megaupload, but you only have to wait 45 seconds, and at most 3 parts to download.
3. I've never had any error downloading a part before, that would be a problem with your internet if you have been getting errors.
4. A lot of the games are on mediafire or ifile.it which has no waiting times and you can download as many parts as you want at a time.
5. We have direct downloads that have been alive for 8 months whereas torrents has trouble staying alive for a few.

Welcome and good luck with the hardware hacks. As for torrents there are plenty of sites which do that(PM me if you like I have invites). Really though you should just be patient and use the sites listed here. They work well and are reliable. :D

For better speeds use this: http://www.flashget.com/index_en.htm

Oh, and another thing.  With direct downloads you don't have to worry about keeping up a ratio :D.

Considering you're not having to pay shit for these downloads, I wouldn't complain about having to wait a total of 6-10 minutes to download each part of the game :D

dizzam.. I get the point!   :-X I see the light I see the light!

heh.. actually, yes, I was just asking a general question. Both have benefits and weaknesses.
I have downloaded a couple of games so far. Most ARE 7 parts or less, but one I ran into had quite a few parts, and I gave up on it for the time being (multi CD game perhaps?).
Mostly, Im just a bit lazy, and dont like to 'attend' my downloading that much. I'll have to change that habbit.

As for having problems, I think that may have to do with still figuring out the methods of joining, etc. (notice I experiment a lot before asking questions.  Nothing more annoying than "Hey how do I......"    "have you downloaded all the files yet?"  "well.. no..   but... "

Mostly, just lamenting the lack of a single unified file. That has more to do with file sharing servers having maximum 100mb file sizes. Torrents would eliminate the issue, but there is the problem of seeds vs leachers...  and I suppose most people wouldnt want to leave up cd images of games they leached.

Share ratios are irrelevent in Torrents. Sure, its GOOD of you to keep up a share ratio, but its not like the old days where the BBS knocked you if you didnt upload first.
