I've gotta hand it to ya, jem. You pulled that one out well. I quite agree with all points you made in the last post.

You can't let it run your life. And yes, people will try to rationalize everything they do to fit their conscience. It's a part of human nature. This is why most religion is a handy tool if it isn't abused.

As the Christian dude who guards the Holy Grail in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade said when Indy asked him if he's ready to die, "My Soul is Prepared. How's Yours?"

Mine is satisfied I will meet my end in a great way, so what more can I ask?

I agree with that. For me, cigarettes have always been the vice that kept me from drugs. My old bass player started fucking around with oxycontin, last I heard he's become a full blown heroine junkie. I just smoke cigs. Not a great habit to have, but better than some.

First, I'd like to stress that in no way am I being judgemental.

Smokers and drinkers are losers.

I don't think anyone's listening to you Jem! :D just playin ... however this topic has gone a bit overboard, it's just a "holi"day and it's all about preference. People love to get high, well let them get high, they love to drink, well let them drink. Voicing your opinion is always very important Jem, but for controversial and preferential things like this, I'd suggest using your INSIDE VOICES. :D

I think its a good thing. People need to voice their opinions. At least it's generated a decent amount of intelligent conversation. Good to get the ol' grey matter workin :)

I'll hit this at face value, my April 20th was dandy :) I started a new anime and got to see a dear friend of mine.

I guess, for my two cents; I'm not a fan of drugs (including alcohol) but I respect that people can decide what they want to do to their bodies. The rowdy types are the ones who make it easy to generalize a hate for substance abusers, and I really don't give those people the time of day.

I know I'd mess up anyone who told me how to live my life, and I give everyone else that same courtesy.

Ironically enough I had to write an essay on the topic of legality and cannabis on 420 (well it was due today but I held out to last minute as usual)

As long as things don't do any long term damage to me I would like to experience as many things as possible... drugs are not an option open to me as I study pharmacy and could potentially be kicked off the course and not allowed to practice following being caught with even just cannabis.

I drink near enough everyday though, ales and bitters, because I really enjoy the taste and would rather spend my money on beer than on clothes and whatever other crap most stuents buy (T-shirts from supermarkets FTW :P). I smoke a cigar or a few cigarettes maybe once a month as the action of smoking is satisfying.

I find it odd that people avoid new experiences... with the possible exception of gay sex I am open to just about anything, in fact if my girlfriend wanted to do me in the bum with a strapon I would probably accept.

"Avoiding new experiences" is a pretty blunt way of putting it.  People have lived before me.  It's not an entirely new experience.

Basic science tells me that ingesting alcohol is not good for me, and inhaling smoke is not good for me.
In lieu of the overwhelming evidence and information that we experience everyday, I'd say that choosing to not smoke or drink alcohol is a wise choice.

Trying something that harms you just because it's a "new experience" isn't convincing.
I haven't tried to saw my arm off yet, and I don't intend to.

Basic science tells me that ingesting alcohol is not good for me, and inhaling smoke is not good for me.

Basic science also tells you that eating fatty foods or candy is not good for you, but i bet you still do that.

so you mean to tell me that jem, or you have never taken a bite of unhealthy food in your life? Doubt it, I guess it was a bad analogy though, since I eat fairly healthy aswell, but do I feel eating a candy bar once and awhile is a bad choice and that makes me fat and a loser, nope. Smoking a bowl once and awhile doesn't make you a loser and a drug addict just like eating a candy bar once and awhile doesn't make you obese or addicted to unhealthy foods.

But you're missing the point.  There's nothing directly damaging about high-calorie foods.

In fact, if you barely have any money for food or are starving - you want to buy food with as many calories as possible, to give you the most energy for your dollar.

The human body instantly recognizes ethanol as poison, and uses your liver to filter it out.  There's a reason you get "buzzed": there's ethanol in your bloodstream circulating around your body, affecting your nerves.

There's also a reason they tell you to drop to the ground and crawl on the floor to safety in a fire.  Inhaling smoke isn't a normal part of life.  You're basically a few minutes away from asphyxiation.

There have also been studies that show a glass of beer or wine every few days is good for you. Prevents some forms of cancer. And ales and bitters are my favorites as well, as are porters and stouts.

Those studies claim antioxidants ward off cancer... and it's the grape juice in wine that carries those antioxidants, not the ethanol.

You could get the same health benefits without the ethanol in regular grape juice.

I think that in the end, we all need to realize that people have free wills and that means the freedom to do what they will to themselves. As a parent/authority figure, you should do your best to curb self-destructive behavior in those that depend on you, but in the end everyone makes their own choices.

You make your choices and you live with them.

Also, let's not forget that I'm a fan of it because well, it feels really nice to smoke pot. :)
