winrar or 7 zip
« on: January 27, 2008, 03:16:37 AM »
Hello all,
I am after a little advice, which program do you think is the best for compressing files?
And how do you do it?
I know how to create several files but how do you make a cdi for instance smaller?

I would be grateful of any sugestions.

Thanks in advance.

7zip normally gives better compression, but it is far better to upload the original rars than to extract the .cdi and then compress it with 7zip.

for multiple files, probably 7z because it only stores the data that they have in common once (i auctually 7z-ed 2 almost identical ISOs but it was almost the full size of both files, idk what happened there) but ive seen rar give the best single file compression (crazy taxy fom this site- like 70mb rared ~700 extracted, but mabey it was a dummy file) it really depends on the file and its contents try both on "ultra" compression setting and see waht turns out better for your particular file.

7-zip is better in all aspects except speed.  It'll compress any file smaller than WinRAR.  If you took that Crazy Taxi file and compressed it 7-zip, I guarantee you it would be smaller.

I think 7-zip is proving to be very useful compared to winrar.
Thanks for all the advice guys & Gals.
