I thought I would make a standard alcohol burning guide for those who are new to the dreamcast scene and don't know exactly what to do. Hey, we were all new at one point

Although the native format for alcohol is mds/mdf, it also has full support for the following files:
.cdi (Discjuggler)
.nrg (Nero)
.ccd (clone cd)
bin/cue (cdrwin)
.iso

The majority of the games you will download on this site are .cdi files (selfbooting)

1. Open alcohol and select image burning wizard

2. After selecting your image file, you will have a screen much like the following:

I have used Cool Cool Toon as an example, as a lot of new dreamcasters are worried about the image size being over 700meg. As you can plainly see the actual burn size is considerably smaller than the physical size. This will be the case in 99% of the images you burn.

3. You can tick the "delete image file after recording" box if you like. I personally prefer to delete manually as I back up all my games to DVD. I suggest you do the same. Click next. This is the final step before burning.

This is your final step, but the most important.
1. Do NOT touch this setting
2. Do NOT touch these settings
3. Do NOT touch these settings
4. Set the write speed to a low setting. Usually after the first burn alcohol will remember this for you

Click start

this sort of shit is impossible to find on the internet. i don't remember how i figured out how to burn dc games, but it wasn't that easy.

The lowest speed that it's giving me the option to burn at is 16X(2400 KB/sec), does anyone know why or how to fix it? Will it work if i's at 16X?

Edit: I'm using the trial version, could this be part of the problem?

Edit2: It appears that it works on my dreamcast anyway, dos anyone think this will be a problem later on?

Nah modern burners should have no problem with writing at 16X.

I just tried burning a DC game for the first time in a few years and had no sucess.

It was sega marine fishing, that I got from here... and I burned it using alcohol 120% with the setting told here, the only difference being that alcohol only lets me pick maximum burn speed and 40x, and nothing else is displayed, but all other settings are the same. DAO/SAO and what not. However when I remember a while ago, I used to use RAW format or something of the sort?

When I go to put the disk in the DC, it spins it like its hitting a rev limiter.... just crazy fast, and nothing happens. Goes to the system menu. I also tried using the utopia boot disk first, but that doesnt work either. Im about to use disc juggler, see what happens with that.

What brand of CD are you using? You might need to use a burner, the one you're using sounds like it's pretty crappy.

I was using some memorex cd-r's. For some reason it wouldnt let me change the speed, and I kept fooling around, not realy sure what did it but i was able to get the write speed down to 8x. It did the same thing when I played the game. Spun up to max RPMs and didnt read anything really.

The software won't let me burn at less than 48x, otherwise all the settings are right.

I'm gonna try anyways and see if it works.

EDIT: Yeah, it worked. Woot.
