Title: Wii firmware update 3.0 is safe ??
Post by: NuTTy on August 07, 2007, 08:00:44 PM
Nintendo just released the latest version of the Wii firmware.  It makes some pretty major interface enhancements to the channels menu, apparently.  A few things I've heard of or seen so far:

1.  A clock display in the channel menu
2.  A new color scheme for the message board
3.  Disk channel icon is different
4.  Faster load times when going back to the channel menu
5.  Faster game read speeds (sounds like BS to me)
6.  You can now move contacts around in the address book
7.  News headlines can be seen when clicking on the News icon, without actually starting the channel
8.  Play time is no longer recorded as a letter on your message board
9.  The blue disk drive light turns on when inserting or removing a disk
10.  A few other minor cosmetic differences.

If you attempt to update, it may or may not display a message saying that this update can break a modified Wii.

Please post here if you update with a different chip, just to reassure anyone who is hesitant about the update.  It just sounds like Nintendo is full of hot-air, though.

The Wii firmware might be like the psps.  somebody might be able to crack an earlier firmware so u can play homebrew of the mem or sumin. just think

Perhaps a custom firmware in the near future

I definitely think they're hypin up on security. And they're trying to think of ways for people to lean towards updating so they don't pirate around. Good idea Nintendo. I mean they're already getting on every website for hosting NES/SNES/GBA/N64 roms etc ten years after they've been available, might as well add security to their new system!

Yeah I really don't like how they're making a big deal about piracy when thousands of people have already gotten their hands on the roms for free. Big deal, let us do what we want! I'm sure a lot of people get them for free and then buy them later. Hell I still buy old NES games off ebay just because it's not the same to play them on anything else.

Yea, isn't that weird... how its not the same?  :)

Still, I'm selling off a large portion so I can have some room.  I'm tired of storing all this crap that I never really use.  I'll take out my NES maybe twice a year to play a game.

But with emulation, I can keep all my old games forever, and they only take up a few gigs on my harddrive.

Kinda sucks play time isn't recorded anymore......

I really liked that feature.  Even though it didn't record time when playing gamecube games.

What does it mean by not recorded as a letter? Maybe it's still recorded, just not as a letter? :|

The way I understand it, is they're just not gonna send you those stupid mails with your playtime in them.

I'm gonna kinda miss the playtime messages, but the main update that they need to do is make GC games playable with the classic controller.

Oh, that's cool.  I wonder how they'd lower game load times though?  Maybe they have a more efficient driver or something now, I dunno.  They must have done something.

The sneaky Nintendo boffins have speeded up the drive times to load the game faster. The thing is that all mod chips are attached to the drive and run at a 3X speed or a 6X. Speeding the drive up on standard wii's is cool. But a modded wii will still run at the speed that the chip sets it. So in a way Nintendo can now find out who is modding wii's. There is a rumour that all the new games will run at a different  drive speed, So if u copy them they wont work on a modded wii.

check this updated screen on firmware update.

I'm surprised they warn you, that's nice of them, lol.

Nintendo really doesn't care too much about piracy.  The R4DS is very popular and Nintendo hasn't done one thing to stop it even though they easily could.

I think if anything, piracy would boost their sales? Just an idea lol ... yeah at least they're nice about it, they must think most hackers are lil 5 year olds :D

I recall my Wii forcing me to update when I first played Super Paper Mario (I could be wrong though).  I think Nintendo is trying to spread the updates as quickly as possible and giving little choice.

My question is, why don't they just try to prevent all this stuff the first time they send out the Wii? I mean they should have come up with all kinds of scenarios and then counteracted with fixes a long time ago before they even distributed the systems ...

Oh well, Bad for them, good for us eg: DC piracy that we all do now coz they didn't make sure u couldn't play game cdrs but they tried by making thier games format GD

I heard that with the new frimware update, you wont be able to boot homebrew via sd card. the people at DCemu.co.uk seem pretty pissed about it.

Well maybe there's still a way. Anything is possible!

It sounds like they don't want anything like what happened to the original XB.

As far as I can tell the update has only affected GC homebrew created using 'mkisofs' with the El Torito switch.  Naturally the Wiikey and Wiifre config discs won't work.  I have not checked but I am certain that new images are available.   I have tested throughly and have not run across any bricked modded consoles from the update,   nor have I noticed any wii backups being unplayable after the update.

As for drive speeds,  I have found no evidence of firmware updates on DMS or D2B drives.  From what I can tell the average drive speed without using wii OS is 968-1,023  KB/s.    I don't see the wii os doing drive speed checks,  as I can't see the drives achieving speeds much higher than 8x 1,200 KB/s.

Personally speaking,  I know for a fact they care very much about this.  Sites found hosting wii images and even ROMS will be receiving letters from Nintendo's lawyers.  One bad thing about the VC is that it is reviving old copyrights.  In short,  Nintendo does very much care about piracy.  You will be seeing products like these and wii chips being removed from all major North American resellers.

That's what I was smelling all the way back when the VC was first mentioned.  Nintendo is trying to sell their old hits all over again, for much cheaper than the original price, and in an ITunes-style format - just to curb emulation (which isn't practiced widespread, but has enough of a hold on hardcores, and others of our ilk) on their turf under their rules.  It's smart business, not to mention marketing.

... sorry I can't concentrate on this conversation thanks to your sig's jello jiggly butt shakin ... :|

I know piracy is a big deal to Nintendo. This update didn't change that though, as you said. I feel bad that it's even possible to play all of these games in like 10 seconds just by googling. I never thought it to be possible. But I am not going to get a Wii just to play the classics, I mean if I had to I'd just buy the older system and buy the games, which I have already done. I still love Nintendo. And even though I know it is possible to get an xb/xb360 game for free on the net, I still show my respects by paying the money. Modding the system was mostly just to play all the shitty games I didn't care much for. It didn't take too long til I sold the thing.

There's amazing things coming for the Wii.  Anytime you sell a system, I think of it as selling a child.

..and there's something wrong with selling children?
