E3 2007: Sound Off!
« on: July 14, 2007, 08:55:03 AM »
Well, it was different, that's for sure.

There wasn't an air of rock-star surrounding this show.  It's missing something.....like excitement.  But with that said, I felt that this was a pretty good year content-wise.  Halo 3 didn't disappoint.  Assassin's Creed looks sicker and sicker.  Beautiful Katamari looks hella fun.  SoulCalibur 4 in real-time is jaw-dropping.  Super Mario Galaxy looks like it could be the true successor to the 3D platformer crown after all (love Boo Mario!).  Smash Brawl looks cool, but they need to show more to get me more than 1/2 amped.

Strangely, the software I was most impressed with came out of the Sony camp, and I'm damn near ashamed to admit that.  Echochrome looks awesome, in a simple-kind of way.  Uncharted looks baller.  Lair looks baller.  GT5 looks baller.  But nothing swings the fat nutsack around like the MGS4 trailer.  Goddamn, that game is sickeningly fucknuts-fantastico.    I can't wait for that one - and I really feel dirty thinking I have to get a PS3 just for that game.

Microsoft gave the consumer 3 years to not worry about the life of their console.  Noble move.
Sony dropped the price of the PS3 by $100, so they could release a newer model sans Emotion Engine (the PS2 processor) and with a whole 20GB more HDD space for the original price of $599.  Dick move.
Nintendo is coming out with a fitness program for the Wii.  Health-conscious move.  The soccer moms rejoice this day.

So, all in all, it was alright.  I wasn't blown away by the RE5 trailer.  Metroid Prime 3 looks moderately okay.  But I think the best is still yet to come - bring on the TGS07!

Discuss.

Halo 3! :D I still haven't been able to play any of the e3 demo's or watch any trailers or any conference videos ... downloading from the 360 marketplace is always the worst alternative. So I'm dl'ing from a torrent right now for the e3 footage and maybe some other day down the road I'll try out Blue Dragon or something. All I really have in my pocket is a Microsoft conference podcast, which was pretty cool to listen to. It didn't sound like it had a lot of people there.

Guys, I think next year is our moment. We all need to save up some benjamins and get the hell over there and show them all who the fuck we are. I've never been to e3, have you?

The Microsoft video was poorly edited. Whoever did it needs to quit their job. It could have been spiced up a lot more. I thought it was good but it could have been better.

God damnit I don't know what more to say about any of it right now :(

Hmmm I thought so too. Didn't they announce that last year? It didn't sound like this year it was all that hot either. I mean ... what's the point in going to e3 when our technology (youtube, downloads, internet articles etc) already allow us to see this stuff? e3 is to promote it even FURTHER. I know they can sprinkle more sugar on it, make it worth watching and going to. I totally want to (almost have to) go to it next year. We'll all go together :)

E3 got scaled down.  It's not the circus it used to be - it's smaller and more stuffy.  But I don't know how long that will last, even Hideo Kojima wanted the old E3 back, and made the Konami presentation run 15 minutes because of that feeling of disappointment.

Of course they all want it back; running around for a week on corporate expense accounts, staying in fancy hotels, and playing video games.

Well, it's supposed to be a trade show of epic proportions.  It went from whooo to who? :D

I agree, Sony surprised me with their content, I'm not going to mention the asshole price drop maneuver.  Uncharted looks amazing, so does Heavenly Sword, and Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction.

Microsoft was predictable, and Nintendo was a bit disappointing (when it comes to new content).

Assassin's creed is going to kick holy ass, and Rock Band looks like a crazy drunken party and DMC 4 is gonna rock too.

I really wish Nintendo would have given us some new titles to look at, other that Wii Fit and Mario Kart (which really isn't a surprise), everything they showed was already announced.  However, it was good to finally see dates for Galaxy and Smash Bros.

Yeah that game looks awesome, reminds me kind of what I hoped a 3D prince of persia game would be.

Yeah, we can probably pretend that's exactly what this is lol. The Prince of Persia's for the next-gen just didn't strike my pot as hard as anything else.

I've never played any Prince of Persia games... except one I downloaded for my old mobile phone :P

I must be out of it or something, haha.

The new Prince of Persia's just didn't click with me, I didn't see what was so amazing about it.

I loved the whole sands of time Trilogy, and it sucks that Ubisoft seems to be sticking by the "no more POP games" statement that they made.  Its really the perfect genre for me: Action-platforming.

Th "Show" itself:  Not being able to attend sucked.  But in comparision to the many times I didn't go, it didn't seem too different.  Still had to check online to see the latest stuff.  Unless you watched the commercial filled G4 specials.

Nintendo:  Metroid still looks awesome, and I know that it plays near perfect.  Galaxy and Brawl got their release dates, but for some reason... don't care.  For some reason I just don't have that much interest in them.  Mario Kart: excited but knew it was coming sooner than later.  Although adding online races and upping the # racers is a welcome addition.  WiiFit while a nifty idea that goes with thier new direction is just giving us another "controller" to use, and pay for.  And I don't care what they think they need to redo thier online components.

Sony: Announced a price drop right before the show, by the end of the show they say it's just a liquidation.  Heavenly Sword rekindled my interest.  Uncharted lookds compelling, in a manner that could be like a modern Prince of Persia.  HOME stuff looks cool but also utterly useless and a waste of time.  MGS4 I'm still on the fence about.  The new trailer was interesting, until the utterly ridiculous Raiden/Vamp scene.  And then Killzone... ZZZzzzz......

Microsoft: Eveyone rejoice Halo 3 is coming... ohhh...  ahhh... whoopdy do.  I know its thier biggest title but I'm sick of hearing about it.  The only exclusive they have that I really care about it Mass Effect, and it looks spectacular.  I can't wait to watse days on that thing.  Honsetly the biggest news I though Microsoft had was that they had gotten Disney on board for thier movie service.  Now if they can convince Mr. Lucas to put up Star Wars.  Plus if HD-DVD fails, at least you can download the high res movies then play them back, removing the disc format altogether.  Finally, Gears fo War PC pissed me off to no end.

Games: Assassin's Creed looks wickedly awesome, but we knew that.  The Force Unleashed blew my mind.  Soul Calibr 4 is going to be sick, but getting a little too DoA in the visuals.
