I think it's a good move, but I still don't think I'll buy one, it just doesn't have my type of games.  The only game I play on the PS2 is GT4, and I'd probably only play GT5 on the PS3 when it comes out.

Yeah i was really happy when i heard about the price is dropping on PS3. I might get one this christmas all depends how my mom feels about it.

I will never get one. The ps3 price drop (now $500, am I right?), and a new one to take over the original price with added functionality (more storage and some other crap I don't know about) ... not worth it. I don't understand why they're doing this so late in the stage. The new Killzone (their kind of Halo game?) doesn't look that impressive. All the games on that system ... just flat out suck.

yeah the ps3 in my opinion is still too expensive, if i do get one it will definitely be last on my list.  They can keep bragging about the graphic quality of their games but until they make a game that doesn't blow no ones going to want to buy the damn thing.

Its really a good move, im gonna get one at the end of the year probably, i predict a very significant raise in ps3 sales, and the games that are coming are awesome. Home looks sweet, GT5, Killzone2 'halo killer' anyone?, and of course the best of the best... MGS4 !!!

Sony doesn't know how to hold ties with any company they work with. Konami with Katamari and MGS4? One of those is already a confirmed title for the 360, and it is very possible mgs4 will be for it in the next year or something!

Ouch, haha.  Did you read the latest?  You know the price cut on the PS3?  They're doing that so they can phase out the 60GB and then leave only the 80GB!  Dirty bastards, lol.  It's just a liquidation, not an actual price cut.  The 80GB will remain $600, and soon the 60GB will be out of stores.

Why should they even sell the system with that much hard drive space? I heard it was possible for ps3 owners to use their external hard drives to add more space.

I also heard something about how the new ps3's use a different chip. Instead of running from the hardware, it's running from the software or something?

It's a dirty, dirty move.  Its whole reason for existence is to move the rest of the outdated product so they can usher in a newer, PS2-Emotion Engine-less version with a whopping 20GB more HDD space and still charge the same price as before.  It's a dick move.  And I hope folks will look into it, but Sony knows that 75% of the world's population are retards and won't look past the $100 price drop.  I, too thought it was cool until I saw the blatant reason WHY.  And that, dear friends, is why as bad as I want to play MGS4, I'll wait for the inevitable 360 port - even if they do sell a ton of systems at $499, they still won't be able to sell enough of them to warrant the exclusive release of a high-profile title like that without the company giving a substantial monetary boost to the developer(s) in question.

That's a conundrum for sure - great business move with a total lack of ethics behind it - it's more of a bait and switch than a price cut.

My bad ... ok so Namco and Konami have both made the move to transfer their games to the 360. We don't even know for sure if either of those games are going to be on the ps3 like they originally planned!

July 13, 2007 - Oh, Sony, what have you done to us now?

Forums across the internet erupted on Monday when Sony revealed that it was dropping the price of the 60 GB model of the PS3. "At last," everyone said. After months of calls for a cut from not only gamers but from a slew of publishers as well, Sony finally came good, bringing down the price by $100. With a raft of good-looking games expected before the end of the year, popular support for the console shot up, pulling up sales at the same time. Within 24 hours of the announcement, the sales rate of the PS3 had doubled.

And the good news didn't end there. Sony unveiled the 80 GB model on Monday too, and even though it is back up at the $599 price again, at least it will come with a game - the top-selling MotorStorm. But then the questions started to come. How was Sony doing this? Why pass along saving to customers now?

First, Sony wasn't exactly straight with us. The 80 GB model of the system that's launching in the US in August is going to be pretty much the exact same system that's available in South Korea. And while that means little for most of the hardware specifications, there is one key difference: emulation.

The current 60 GB PS3 has a limited amount of actual PlayStation 2 hardware inside - a stopgap measure that Sony threw in to the console at the end of the development process to get it out the door before the end of 2006. This has the advantage to console owners that the system is capable of playing just about all PS2 games. How important that is to the average console owner is a debate for another day. But it's fair to say that it was an important feature to the hardcore, who are the people that buy $600 systems at launch - especially since Sony has been slow to expand its PS3 library.

Of course, the downside is that the inclusion of PS2 hardware means that this particular model of the PS3 costs Sony more to manufacture than the European and Asian models, which trade in those chips for software emulation. Unlike Microsoft, Sony has actually done a good job of getting most of its games backwards compatible by emulation right from the start, and at the moment the percentage of supported titles sits in the upper 80s, meaning whichever you have, you'll likely be able to play most of your older games. But it should be obvious that for Sony to make the most of its production lines, it needs to get rid of the bigger-loss-making 60 GB model as soon as possible so that it can concentrate on the actual PS3 hardware specification.

Enter the price cut. Think of the $100 not as savings on a console but as a necessary discount that will allow Sony to clear that 60 GB stock out as soon as possible and earn it some positive press in the process. The only reason the 20 GB model existed at all was so that Sony could at least point to it as an option for those that wanted to get a PS3 but weren't prepared to spend $600 for a games console. Likewise the 60 GB model is now an anomaly - the last of the PS3s that has physical PS2 hardware inside it.

But that's not how Sony tried to sell it to us. Jack Tretton acted as if he was doing gamers a favour, and for the few people out there who manage to pick up the system before stock of the existing 60 GB models runs out it will be a good deal. They'll be the last gamers to pick up this hardware aberration and they'll be able to save money while doing it. And once the stock of 60 GB units is gone, so is the "price cut".

Kai Hirai, the new head of Sony's global PlayStation business, and David Reeves, his European counterpart, have both admitted that this price cut isn't going to last long. Reeves said in an interview that the existing 60 GB stock would probably run out by the end of July, but unless current supplies of the console are very low, it seems unlikely that it would be so short - especially over the summer months, before the big-name games start to arrive this autumn.

Perhaps this uncertainty over how long the 60 GB units will last is the reason that Sony has been toying with the media so much about a console price cut. Just days before the start of E3, company CEO Ryoji Chubachi told one reporter straight that the company had no plans to cut the price of the console. A few days later Jack Tretton ostensibly did exactly that, but if you now consider that the $499 60 GB model is merely a discontinued product, has Sony really given us a price cut at all? I don't think so.

The next question is, what happens when the 60 GB units run out? We're back to having only a $599 unit, the 80 GB model, and gamers are again faced with the same question of whether a video game console is worth $599. Sony will surely go down as the only hardware manufacturer to effectively raise the entry barrier to a new console twice in one year.

It's unfortunate because Sony was at last beginning to drag itself out of a morass of bad press that has plagued the console since birth. One of the biggest barriers has been the limited software library, something several executives at the company have admitted is a problem for the console in the short term. But the past week has demonstrated that perhaps this particular problem is nearly history. We've seen a lot of games with enormous potential this week and Sony has even managed to stem the exodus of exclusives and picked up a few of its own.

But when we get to the end of the year, holiday shoppers going into stores are again going to be faced with that dissuasive price sticker. Yes, there are going to be many more worthwhile games to play, but that's still a lot of money for a console. And that could be enough to persuade potential buyers to look elsewhere for their gaming.

Unless of course Sony surprises us at the Tokyo Game Show in September with a real price cut.
