PS3 HDD Upgrade
« on: May 23, 2008, 04:30:54 PM »
I successfully upgraded the HDD in my PS3 last night from a 40 to a 120GB!!

and

Here is how you do it!

First, find a compatible 3.5 SATA hard drive (like the hdds found in modern laptops)

Backup any game data, demos, music, movies, etc... to a thumb drive (or an external usb hard drive if you have a lot of stuff)

next, using a PC, download the latest firmware update onto your thumb drive as explained ==>http://www.us.playstation.com/PS3/About/SystemUpdate/pc_update.html#update_PC

turn the ps3 system off... flipping the switch in the back.

remove the old hard drive.  There is a little cover on the left side of the unit covering it... you do not need a screw driver to pry it off, just ur finger nails. Remove the blue screw and pull.

insert the thumb drive with the updated firmware and the new larger hdd.

turn the unit back on, and follow the instructions on the screen.  (press Select and Start, blah blah blah)

restore all your game saves back onto the ps3 and you are ready to go!!!

That sounds simple!  Nice work, Blurr :).

Does this void the warranty? ... what am i saying... does the ps3 have a warranty?  lol

it does NOT void the warranty... you can always stick the stock hard drive back in... AND... there is no seal to break to remove the hard drive...

i dont know what kind of warranty the ps3 has... because i have never had to use it.

Next to the Wii, it is the most stable console i own.

Do you mean 2.5?  The PS3 hard drive is a 2.5" HDD, not 3.5.  I wish it was 3.5,  Id have that motherfucker upgraded by now :D

Also,  Could you put something bigger or is 120gb the max?  And does it matter if its SATA 1.5 or 3.0?  Also,  Any recommendations on brands.  I usually like to stick with Seagate.

OOPS... you  are correct, it is a 2.5 not a 3.5... typing error.

It does NOT have to be a SATA 2 or 3.  120GB is not the max, but i have not heard of anyone successfully install greater then 250 GB yet tho...

It is recommended that the drive be 5400RPM or better.

Stock drives are Hitachi, but i installed a Seagate.  I have an 80GB and another 120GB i would be willing to sell if anyone is interesting

Thanks Blurr

This is awesome i just upgraded my PS3 HD to 320 gig Get In.
There really is no need for such a big HD but i had a HD spare so thought why the hell not took me 15 mins to do it all and hey presto.
Im now going to house the original HD in an external case and use it on my laptop.

Nice One

Its reccomended to use a 5400RPM drive because that was the stock drive's RPM and you dont want to add any extra heat to your PS3
