ReviveDC Project Presents…Record of Lodoss War
So, here's the story on this one. The last release wasn't actually burn tested, and we weren't aware of it. It was an accidental oversight. It was only tested in an emulator, and it functioned there, and it just slipped out of our minds because we had been sitting on it for a while. It turns out it didn't work on actual physical consoles, so we pulled it. atreyu187 and I (comradesnarky) went to work at trying to figure out what was wrong with the game, with little success. A good way to learn in these instances is to go back to scene releases and see what the big guys did. Stone Arts was the only group that did an NTSC-U version; it required a launcher to load the actual boot binary of the game. Then I went to look at the PAL scene versions; DCP used the same launcher, and the binary in our PAL GDI was identical to the one in the NTSC-U binary. Meaning that the PAL version of Lodoss has the exact same protection. Then I noticed something curious; TuxTheWise's release said he dumped it clean off the GDI and it didn't need modifications. So, I dumped the files out of Tux's release and atreyu and I started poking around. Tux's DCRes release wasn't clean off the GDI at all; I did a comparison in a hex editor and found there were 2.5 million changes to the file compared to the one off the GDI. atreyu checked Paradox's boot binary and found that MD5s matched between their release and Tux's. So, Tux didn't ever even have a GDI of Lodoss; he just ripped Paradox's release and stole their work. I believe we call that TuxTheLies.
We're not going to pretend we're ripping geniuses and that we figured it out; we were stumped. So, that's why PARADOX is listed as the cracker. We did borrow their binary, and we'll admit it. The NTSC-U files were dumped from atreyu's copy of the game, and we did modify the sort order. Seeing as the binaries were identical between the NTSC-U and PAL versions before PARADOX did the cracking, there's no harm in the swap. Tux's Lodoss release was a glorified repack of the PARADOX release. It's disrespectful as fuck to do that, and it casts doubt on all DCRes releases. We know for a fact that his Dino Crisis and Silver releases were rehashes of the scene releases. He said he downsampled the videos, but MD5 matches with the scene rips of those games. It's really not fun to come out and say this stuff about DCRes, and we found out about it a while ago. We had originally decided to keep it quiet, because we really aren't trying to start anything with this, but it's not fair to people looking for quality rips.
So, here you go; the first NTSC-U version of Record of Lodoss War to work without a launcher. Courtesy of atreyu's rip of the disc and EViL JOE of PARADOX's cracking work. This is the first NTSC-U version that will work on hardware and emulators, so enjoy. Not even the original PARADOX release worked on both.
