NOTE: I've seen some people uploading my releases in other servers. I recommend you always getting
my releases of my uploads in the forums above, because sometimes I release fixes or re-launch some
games that have problems. If you get my uploads you'll be sure of having the latest releases.
Additionally, you'll get the original package, not images made from discs, so you'll be sure that
nothing is corrupted.

Rainbow Cotton (NTSC-J)
-----------------------
Ripped: Nothing.
Downsampled: All audio 44khz stereo -> 32khz stereo; most videos downsampled.
Source: GD dump.
=== ATTENTION: ===
You need to execute the "unpack.bat" before burning, it will unpack the .ecm file and create your
.cdi image.
If you need to apply any patch, do it in the unpacked .cdi file, not in the .ecm file.
==================
Long time I don't work on Dreamcast... but don't worry, I'm back with this ultra cute game:
Rainbow Cotton. It's a bizar 3D shooter, very fun and hard.
It was a very time consuming project. Although there were no protections involved, two
complications appeared.
First complication, the simplest one: game keeps streaming music and voice from different files.
Since the music pack is big, reader keeps moving all the time during the game. To make it better,
I put the audio files in the out part of the disc and downsampled every 44khz audio to 32khz. With
that, size were reduced (and therefore the radius distance between the files) and since outer part
of the disc holds more data than the the inner per radius unit, the mean distance also got
reduced. As I always do in my release, the difference in quality can hardly me noticed. The moving
kept much better after this change, but it still happens. It's just something we'll have to live
in, and shouldn't be annoying.
Second complication, the hardest one: game loads game files WHILE playing the videos. Really. If
you have videos in too high bitrate, they will keep locking once in a while. If the files are not
in a good order in the disc, in addition with the locking you'll also get too much moving of the
reader (noise!). How to solve that? I wasted some discs (five, to be exact) in tests, and
fortunately everything went alright at the end. I splitted videos in two parts, and put game files
in the middle. This way no video would be too far from game files. Additionally, I tested
different bitrates and made some worst case tests with the first videos to be sure everything
would be played correctly.
This is another case where original GD file order just don't work, unless you use a very low
bitrate for videos...
Ending video needed to be downsampled because of the size, and arranged to make sure the other two
not downsampled videos played right (reading speed is not good enough in the inner part of the
disc to play them correctly).
There were some redundant files that were re-linked, and an "almost redundant video" that was
re-linked as well. It was the video that plays in the main menu if you don't press any key. The
videos were identical, except for a little japanese subtitle for about two seconds. The one with
the subtitle were maintained and the other file was re-linked to it.
PAL users, this game will already work in 60hz on your consoles.
By the way, I'm looking forward to add subtitles to the videos. So if you know japanese, or know
anyone that knows and want to help, please let me know. There are about 12 minutes of video to be
translated, and I can help the person finding/indicating the appropriate tools.
Oh, and I almost forgot to thank: the anonymous person that ripped this game; fatman01923 for
uploading it for me; BIMBOBOOP for letting me know that the rip was available.
I'm really happy with the results. It gave me a lot of work, but it totally worth it. Have fun
with this not very popular but great 3D shooter.
Features of my release:
- Not corrupted files at all, it was made with GD dump files.
- Used custom DCRES optimization techniques. It means faster loadings and less Dreamcast reader
noise.
- All videos plays correctly.
- Selfboot.
About the game:
- It has VGA Box support.
Other comments:
- "Extras" folder in the pack contains some stuff including: images from CD part of the GD, and
a long japanese dialog track also from the CD part of GD. I wish I understand anything.
- Release comes with covers.
