Title: PS3 Green Screen
Post by: woodieq on February 08, 2010, 08:10:25 AM
Apparently this is a common problem, but I can't seem to find any good answers.

Anyway, some time ago I ordered the awesome PS3 that does everything (the launch 60 gig model) off ebay, and after hooking it up I came across a problem...the screen got all pixely and green and my movies or games or ubuntu (yesss) would just quit and freeze. I can start up my PS3 just great, and use it for quite a little bit, but then it just decides to ruin my life and stop working.

I'm using HDMI and Digital Audio, and it's not an HDMI problem, because I've used the trusty component cables with the same result. I don't leave it on for extended periods, so I don't assume it's overheating.

It's kind of funny that it will freeze after 5 minutes sometimes, but I'll reset it and get halfway through Terminator 2 (in blu-ray) before it freezes again. Very strange.

There are plenty of videos on youtube of people with the same problem, but not many answers.

Can anyone help?

Never experienced anything like that, but I would suggest performing a complete system restore if you haven't done so yet.
Probably not anything like overheating. On my days off I literally leave mine on all day while I'm watching tv in the other room or whatever and it doesn't get hot.
Worst case scenario sony fixes it for $100. But I would be a little surprised if a system restore doesn't work. Just back up your data first.
By the way, I'm jealous. Wish I had a 60 gig so I could play ps2 games through hdmi.

Yea, I'm an informed gamer and computer geek that does his research before buying an expensive piece of equipment. I've done restores before, both the 'quick' and full restores. I kind of got good results after upgrading the firmware, but it just reverted back to this state. I might have to pick up a torx security bit and rip the thing open, and maybe add some new thermal paste to the GPU. I've heard that's been a common fix as well.

If I can't do anything than I bet I can find some guy out in like South Dakota who will do it cheap. All I'll need to do is ship it.

I'm still kind of pissed cause I bought the thing to be a kickass media server, loaded with ubuntu, and a blu ray drive. Oh, and it's got card readers :D

its the GPU plain and simple.  Shell out $100 for sony to refurb.
