Wii firmware update 3.0 is safe ??
« on: August 07, 2007, 08:00:44 PM »
Nintendo just released the latest version of the Wii firmware.  It makes some pretty major interface enhancements to the channels menu, apparently.  A few things I've heard of or seen so far:

1.  A clock display in the channel menu
2.  A new color scheme for the message board
3.  Disk channel icon is different
4.  Faster load times when going back to the channel menu
5.  Faster game read speeds (sounds like BS to me)
6.  You can now move contacts around in the address book
7.  News headlines can be seen when clicking on the News icon, without actually starting the channel
8.  Play time is no longer recorded as a letter on your message board
9.  The blue disk drive light turns on when inserting or removing a disk
10.  A few other minor cosmetic differences.

If you attempt to update, it may or may not display a message saying that this update can break a modified Wii.

Please post here if you update with a different chip, just to reassure anyone who is hesitant about the update.  It just sounds like Nintendo is full of hot-air, though.

I definitely think they're hypin up on security. And they're trying to think of ways for people to lean towards updating so they don't pirate around. Good idea Nintendo. I mean they're already getting on every website for hosting NES/SNES/GBA/N64 roms etc ten years after they've been available, might as well add security to their new system!

Yeah I really don't like how they're making a big deal about piracy when thousands of people have already gotten their hands on the roms for free. Big deal, let us do what we want! I'm sure a lot of people get them for free and then buy them later. Hell I still buy old NES games off ebay just because it's not the same to play them on anything else.

Yea, isn't that weird... how its not the same?  :)

Still, I'm selling off a large portion so I can have some room.  I'm tired of storing all this crap that I never really use.  I'll take out my NES maybe twice a year to play a game.

But with emulation, I can keep all my old games forever, and they only take up a few gigs on my harddrive.

Kinda sucks play time isn't recorded anymore......

I really liked that feature.  Even though it didn't record time when playing gamecube games.

What does it mean by not recorded as a letter? Maybe it's still recorded, just not as a letter? :|

The way I understand it, is they're just not gonna send you those stupid mails with your playtime in them.

I'm gonna kinda miss the playtime messages, but the main update that they need to do is make GC games playable with the classic controller.

Oh, that's cool.  I wonder how they'd lower game load times though?  Maybe they have a more efficient driver or something now, I dunno.  They must have done something.

The sneaky Nintendo boffins have speeded up the drive times to load the game faster. The thing is that all mod chips are attached to the drive and run at a 3X speed or a 6X. Speeding the drive up on standard wii's is cool. But a modded wii will still run at the speed that the chip sets it. So in a way Nintendo can now find out who is modding wii's. There is a rumour that all the new games will run at a different  drive speed, So if u copy them they wont work on a modded wii.

check this updated screen on firmware update.

I'm surprised they warn you, that's nice of them, lol.

Nintendo really doesn't care too much about piracy.  The R4DS is very popular and Nintendo hasn't done one thing to stop it even though they easily could.

I think if anything, piracy would boost their sales? Just an idea lol ... yeah at least they're nice about it, they must think most hackers are lil 5 year olds :D

I recall my Wii forcing me to update when I first played Super Paper Mario (I could be wrong though).  I think Nintendo is trying to spread the updates as quickly as possible and giving little choice.
